Redoing the Bedroom {pt. 3}

See Part I here and Part II here.

And now… the finished project.

Drum roll please…!

Remember our closet area?

Ugh. Makes me feel icky looking at it.

Husband installing the closet that we bought. I found it at Home Depot about a month ago for $99. We decided it was what we wanted, but we couldn’t afford it, so we would wait. Then, when we purchased the paint on Monday, I decided to go look at it again. The price had dropped to $78. Sold! Then, we went to check out, and it was only $48. Win!!!
Notice that while he is valiantly installing the closet, I was enjoying a {large} glass of wine.  I’m just here for moral support.

And here. Here is the final closet project! Well, almost final. We’re going to get another bar to hang in the top part of the closet and doors to hide the clothes on both top and bottom. We’ll also make those two in between shelves into drawers, to hid the unmentionables, which are now on the internet. Win.

Next, the vanity stand.  Remember it before?

Well, here it is now! Isn’t that lovely? And the bluuuuuue! I am just so in love. It’s cleaned up. I got rid of a ton of stuff. Ah. Eventually there will be something more permanent there, but for now, it’s lovely.

Next up… our chair corner. I love this corner. It’s comfy. It’s nice to sit in {for the husband} while I’m getting ready.  But, it tended to get messy.  Clothes thrown on the chair. Junk on the floor.  The nightstand would just end up with junk on it.

Well, here’s the corner now!

What do you think? It just looks fresher.  We moved the night stand to another part so that we aren’t just stacking stuff.  The window is now the nightstand, with just my button lamp and our alarm clock.

And, finally. The bed area. Before. It wasn’t really that bad. Just kind of color-less. And of course, lots of stuff shoved under there.

Finished!

I am just so unbelievably happy with the way the room turned out. I’m also pleased with how much we’re giving away and how much we decluttered our lives by cleaning out the room. I’m donating 2 bags stuffed with dress clothes to the YWCA and their Job Outfitters program. And these are nice clothes: suit jackets, pants, skirts, dresses… stuff that’s just been {literally} collecting dust because I haven’t been wearing it.  I had a hard time giving them up.  But, this is worth it.  We also got rid of a bunch of plastic storage stuff… that kind that just traveled with us from the dorms.

Our room fits us better now. More colorful. More fun. And, I couldn’t be more happy.

What do you guys think?

Redoing the Bedroom {pt. 1}

See Part II here and Part III here.

For the last 6 months, I’ve wanted to paint our bedroom. It’s not a bad bedroom, a bit small, no closet space. But it was white. We have beautiful woodwork throughout the apartment, but someone got happy with the white paint and painted over all the wood in our kitchen and in our bedroom/hallway. It felt awfully institutionalized.

I originally wanted to try to scrape the white paint off. And I thought about it until I pulled off a piece (did I mention it was old paint too? probably lead) and it was about 1/8 of an inch thick, with more white on there. So, that plan seemed like it wasn’t going to work. Then, I decided I wanted a blue/gray color. a) because it’s calming and b) it would look really good with the white “trim.” Husband got on board once we went to go look at paint colors.

So, this past weekend I was on fall break (meaning instead of getting a week off for Thanksgiving, we get Monday and Tuesday off in mid-October). On Monday, we painted.

Before:

Our bed.  I created those canvases above the bed with this as inspiration. As someone who often doesn’t feel crafty, I’m really in love with them. Folded up there on the right hand corner is our wedding quilt.  We used it during the ceremony in lieu of a unity candle and it’s always on our bed. Probably one of the first things I’d grab in a fire. For real.

Corner of the room.  Husband spent about 20 minutes getting that chair into the room.  And  the cat lives in that window.

This is my vanity/make up getting ready place. Our bathroom is tiny. Teeny-tiny. Without any storage.  We don’t even have a toilet paper holder. So, I had to get creative with getting ready space.

Then, finally, probably the most shameful part of the bedroom. The one where you kind of cringe anytime someone asked for a tour. Our “closet” area.  See that tiny door? That’s supposed to be out closet.  It houses Chet’s {hanging} clothes and that’s it.  Most of his clothes lived under the bed or on the bottom of the white drawer thing. My {un}mentionables live in that suitcase. And my folded clothes (cami’s, sweats, etc) were living in the white thing. Everything else lived on that crappy, crappy hanger thing from Target.

Since this is getting ridiculously long, I’m going to pause for now and do homework.  Tomorrow, I shall show you our painting!
